UPMC Italy is issuing a call for applications for the following no-term position: 1 Chief of Diabetes and Pancreatic Islet Transplantation Unit (Ref. RDIA/18 I)

The Chief of the Diabetes and Islet Transplantation Unit follows the directives of the Unit director and Director of Institute, and ensures clinical and administrative supervision of his/her unit/service. He/She collaborates in synergy with the following services: Nutrition, Clinical Psychology, Cardiology, Nephrology, and Nursing Service.

The position is responsible, personally or by means of assigned staff, for the Unit’s clinical and research activities, particularly the Pancreas and Islet Transplant Program, and increasing the activities dedicated to post-transplant diabetes and management of endocrine and metabolic diseases for ISMETT patients (including drafting and monitoring of hospital guidelines).
Consistent with the Institute for Scientific-based Care and Treatment [IRCCS] lines of research (treatment of end-stage organ failure), the Unit’s core activity is the consolidation and development of the Pancreas and Islet Cell Transplant Program, and of related laboratory research. The activity of the Diabetes and Islet Transplantation Unit focuses on programs more directly aimed at the treatment and study of post-transplant diabetes.

The Unit is open to collaborative clinical and research projects, and is currently in active collaboration with the University of Pittsburgh, and the Diabetes Research Institute of Miami.

The ideal candidate possesses the following requisites:

  • Degree in Medicine and Surgery recognized in Italy, or equivalent title.
  • Postgraduate diploma in Endocrinology and Metabolic Diseases, Food Science, Internal Medicine recognized in Italy, or equivalent title.
  • Enrollment in the Board of Physicians
  • At least 5 years of clinical practice in Italy or abroad, preferably in transplant centers.
  • Scientific production on diabetology rated with the H-index (to be specified in the CV).
  • Excellent knowledge of English.
  • Experience in management of staff or simple or complex operating units.
  • Professional experience in the units of competence as described in the profile detailed above.
  • Work/training experience abroad.

Motivation, flexibility, problem solving, good communication and relational and team-working skills, and familiarity with the main computer systems are also instrumental to the role.

The contract offered will be commensurate with the experience and skills of the selected candidate.

The workplace is Palermo.
