UPMC Italy is issuing a call for applications for the following fixed-term position: Cardiology/Cardiac Surgery Fellowship (Ref. Fellow CC/20 TD)

IRCCS ISMETT is a multi-organ transplant center and high-specialty acute care hospital. Its Cardiology Unit is multifaceted and includes a well-developed heart transplant program, including ECMO and VAD, full service cardiac surgical program, interventional cardiology including
transcatheter and structural procedures, as well as non-invasive imaging program (echocardiography, stress testing, CT, MRI, etc.). IRCCS ISMETT is part of Italy’s national cardiology network and is fully integrated with the Ri.MED Foundation, conducting collaborative research on computational modeling and biomechanical valve research projects using the most innovative and minimally-invasive technologies. The Ri.MED Foundation is building the Biotechnology and Biomedical Research Center (BRBC) that, when fully operational, will host over 600 researchers.

IRCCS ISMETT is provided with a state-of-the-art cardiac surgery center where approximately 800 extracorporeal circulation procedures are performed. The procedures, performed with the most modern minimally invasive techniques, encompass all adult cardiovascular diseases, including valve diseases, ischemic heart diseases, thoracic aneurysms, and congenital heart diseases. A heart transplant and mechanical circulatory support program is also available for patients with end-stage cardiac decompensation who cannot undergo conventional surgery.

We are seeking young specialized physicians interested in embarking on a cardiology or cardiac surgery fellowship program. The selected candidate will be involved in the daily activity of our Cardiology and Cardiac Surgery Units, including medical rounds and OR activity.


  • Degree in Medicine and Surgery recognized in Italy, or equivalent title.
  • Postgraduate diploma in Cardiac Surgery or Cardiology recognized in Italy or equivalent title (already obtained or to be obtained during the current year).
  • Enrollment in the professional board.

Preferred qualifications:

  • Previous training/professional experience in other transplant centers in Europe or United States of America.
  • Scientific production rated with the H-index (to be specified in the CV).

Other requisites: English proficiency, inclination for research activity, knowledge of main computer applications, strong motivation, flexibility, and stress management, problem solving, interpersonal, communication, and teamwork skills are also instrumental to the role. Good teamwork abilities; flexibility.

The workplace is Palermo.
